6 Type 1 Tips For Dosing Cereal⠀

Absolutely without a doubt; MUST use a scale. Zero the scale, add the cereal to desired weight. More accurate than using measuring cups, and with cereal those extra carbs can cause spikes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Try using almond milk. Cereal, at least the kind my kid likes, is sugar, sugar, sugar! I can sometimes get away with using almond milk, if I give it a little squirt of liquid stevia or liquid sweetener. Takes the unwanted taste out a bit more. No go on the almond milk, use a milk that is higher in protein.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Give it for dinner. 9/10 evening cereal is less drastic to blood glucose. You may even find they go low. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Use a different insulin to carb ratio. I have to add anywhere from 5-7g per bowl to his equation to get it right. Depends on the cereal as well. Add the carbs from cereal and milk together and add a gram or two more. Call it the cereal method.

This one is also critical. PREBOLUS. If my son is in the lower range, I give it at least 10 minutes. If he is on the higher side, I dose a correction with the carbs as depicted by how high he is. Example: 230, 23 minutes prior to bring BG in range + 10 mins for food (as needed).
- This sounds silly, but allow 2 bowls or at least 1 1/2 bowls. Dose the second bowl as they eat it. The extra insulin down the line, even a delay of 10 mins helps! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hi! When you say you add 5-7 g is that to the insulin to carb ratio or to the total carbs from cereal and milk? Please let me know my son has been asking for cereal 🤞🏼☹️
Hey there! Thanks for asking this (I should definitely make that a bit clearer). Add to the total carb count. You’ll need to play around with the number and find the count that works the best for your son.
